We were very sad to learn of the death of Professor Geoffrey Howson.
Geoffrey was an Honorary Member of the Mathematical Association and a former president of the MA.
In his 1989 Presidential Address, Geoffrey talked about the New Challenges maths education and educators faced. You can read this address HERE
"We note with great sadness the death of Professor Geoffrey Howson, who was MA President in 1988, and had served the MA for many years before that. Geoffrey's early mathematics research is still memorialised as the "Howson property". After National Service and five years at the Royal Naval College in Greenwich he was appointed to manage the early years of SMP in Southampton - which he served as Trustee, and as Chair for many years. He later joined the Mathematics Department, of which he was Head 1990-92. He wrote numerous books, reports and papers, and was widely known and respected for his work in mathematics education. As Secretary-General of ICMI in the 1980s he helped to stabilise ICMI/ICME. He received awards from Columbia University and from Japan and China. A full obituary will appear in the Gazette." We would like to thank Tony Gardiner for this short piece.
We would also like to invite people to follow this link below, where people can leave messages and make a donation in his name to the Campaign for Dignity in Dying or the Winchester Hospice
