We are delighted to announce that Prof John Berry and Dr Gerald (Gerry) Leversha have accepted Honorary Membership of The Mathematical Association. Honorary Membership is awarded in recognition of outstanding contribution to mathematics or mathematics education and only in exceptional circumstances.
John served as the President of the Mathematical Association (MA) for the year 1999-2000. His presidential address was titled "Developing the Mathematical Feel," during this presentation, the audience was instructed to stand and wave their arms around! A copy of John's PA can be found in the November 2000 Gazette.
John joined the MA Council in 1998, and after his term as President, he took on the role of co-editor for the publication Mathematics in Schools.
Gerry dedicated most of his teaching career to St Paul's School in London. He contributed his first item to the Gazette in October 1991 and has since written at least fourteen more articles. However, he will be most remembered for his time as Editor, which began with the July 2002 issue. To date, he has edited a total of 69 issues of the Gazette.
