MA votes in favour of merger 29 April 2025

MA votes in favour of merger

We are pleased to announce that at our AGM, our members voted overwhelmingly in favour of proceeding with the merger of the five leading mathematical subject associations into a single, unified organization.  This landmark decision marks a significant step toward consolidating efforts to advance mathematics education.

The new organization, which will be known as AMiE (the Association for Mathematics in Education), aims to bring together the collective expertise and resources of the five merging associations (AMET, ATM, MA, NAMA and NANAMIC) to better serve mathematics educators, learners, and the broader mathematics community.  By unifying under one body, AMiE seeks to provide a home for everyone within the mathematics education community.

Next Steps:

  • The Other Associations: Following our initial vote, the ATM will hold their vote next on whether their members wish to proceed with the merger.  Following the ATM vote, AMET, NAMA and NANAMIC will then hold their votes.  It is anticipated this process will be complete by around the end of June 2025.
  • Establishment of Governance Structures: Assuming the merger progresses, a transitional board will be formed from members of the existing trustees of the associations to oversee both the creation of AMiE and the establishment of various strategic groups, which will provide spaces to represent the voices and needs of the five existing associations.
  • Member Engagement: Members of the merging associations will be invited to participate in further shaping the vision, mission, and strategic priorities of AMiE through the establishment of strategic groups and consultations.
  • Launch Timeline: The unified organization is expected to be officially launched within the next 9-12 months, with interim updates provided to members throughout the transition period.

This key step in the merger represents a commitment from MA members to strengthening the impact and reach of mathematics education in the UK.  By combining resources and expertise, AMiE is poised to become a leading force in supporting all involved in the teaching and learning of mathematics at all ages and stages, whilst promoting the critical role of mathematics nationwide.
