President Prof Paul Glaister's branch visit 4 October 2025

President Prof Paul Glaister's branch visit

On a very windy day with warnings of severe travel disruptions I was both relieved and delighted that I got to meet up with the Yorkshire Branch as planned. Very many thanks to Ruth and the committee for inviting me, and to the brave souls who came through torrential downpours in a howling wind to spend 90 minutes talking with me about mathematics!

My talk - Celebrating the beauty, power and joy of mathematics - a mathematician’s miscellany, and an apology – covered a few of the mathematical problems I have posed and explored over the years which are suitable for mathematics students (and their teachers/lecturers!). The problems ranged through ones in calculus, trigonometry, series, iteration, geometry, and mechanics, with most appearing in my 480 publications, and specifically some of the 82 of these which have appeared in the Mathematical Gazette or Mathematics in School.

I thoroughly enjoyed the session and hope that everyone else got something out of it.

I was also pleased to see there some of the friends I have made over the years on my mathematics education pursuits, including an esteemed former MA President – no prizes for guessing who that was!

With the Yorkshire Branch being established in 1920 I wish them all the best in the transition to AMiE and for their next 100 years!

Prof Paul Glaister CBE
