We were saddened to learn of the passing of Bertie Bellis in October 2025.
He was the MA President for the year 1971-1972 and the 1972 Annual Conference was held in Edinburgh which was the first held in Scotland (but not the last). At the time, Bertie was Headmaster of Daniel Stewart's College in Edinburgh.
Much of his own schooling was at Kingswood School in Somerset and from there he went to St John's College, Cambridge where he was an Exhibitioner. In 1951,he started his teaching career at Rossall School, Lancashire. In 1956 he joined the MA and taught at Highgate School in London then in 1965 he moved to Edinburgh where he remained until joining his last school, The Leys School in Cambridge. This final headship was from 1974 until 1986. His retirement was spent in Cambridge.
An obituary for Bertie will be published in the July 2026 edition of The Mathematical Gazette.
